Munster Close to Securing Deal for Lyon Winger Abrahams

Reports have surfaced indicating that Munster Rugby is close to finalizing a deal for South African winger Thaakir Abrahams, which may excite their fans in the coming weeks. The URC champions have been in search of a non-Irish qualified back-three player, with recent rumors linking them to the Lyon wing.

Abrahams, who has performed impressively this season, scoring six tries in 12 games for Lyon, joined the French side in the summer of 2023 after standing out for the Sharks in the BKT United Rugby Championship.

Munster’s assistant coach, Mike Prendergast, has stated that the club is in the market for a back-three player, but has not confirmed Abrahams’ move to Thomond Park. However, he has suggested that an official announcement may be forthcoming.

Prendergast has described Abrahams as an “electric” player with exceptional footwork and speed, praising his abilities and highlighting his impressive performances for Lyon and the Sharks.

While Abrahams is not a direct replacement for centre Antoine Frisch, who is set to join Toulon next season, his potential transfer is believed to have been made possible by the budget created from Frisch’s departure. Toulon has reportedly paid the province a transfer fee due to Frisch remaining under contract at Thomond Park next season.

Munster has already secured the services of Connacht’s Tom Farrell to strengthen their midfield options for the upcoming season. Despite previously denying rumors of Frisch’s move, Prendergast has acknowledged that the centre’s return to France was inevitable after he expressed his intention to represent Les Bleus at the international level.

Looking ahead, Prendergast has emphasized the importance of the current season and acknowledged Frisch’s significant contribution to the team. He also expressed optimism about the arrival of new signings, such as Tom Farrell, and the fresh dynamic they will bring to the squad.

Munster fans can watch the team in action against Ulster in the URC this Saturday at 5pm on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player. Additionally, live updates will be available on rte.ie/sport and the RTÉ News app, with commentary on Saturday Sport on RTÉ Radio 1.

With the potential addition of Thaakir Abrahams and the upcoming changes to the squad, Munster supporters have plenty to be excited about as the team prepares for the future.
