In a momentous development, a group of current and former rugby players from across the globe, led by the renowned Siya Kolisi of South Africa, have joined forces to establish the esteemed Global Rugby Players Foundation. This distinguished assembly also comprises icons such as Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, and Jonny Wilkinson, among others.
With the backing of both World Rugby and International Rugby Players, the foundation will be governed by a charity board of trustees chaired by former Wallabies captain George Gregan, with Sara Heath serving in the capacity of chief executive officer.
The primary aim of the Global Rugby Players Foundation is to provide aid and empowerment to rugby players following their retirement, ensuring their ability to lead fulfilling and healthy lives beyond the sport. The foundation seeks to provide tailored solutions addressing global issues, catering to players irrespective of their geographical location.
To kick off its operations, the foundation will commence four pilot programmes in Ireland, South Africa, the Pacific Islands, and New Zealand from June 1. Subsequently, central support will be introduced in the autumn, with plans for additional funding cycles in the winter of 2024.
The foundation’s comprehensive support framework will be built upon five fundamental pillars, encompassing grant funding for customised regional programmes, centralized delivery of health and well-being services, career and business coaching, community support through a dedicated app, and collaboration initiatives with diverse organisations and sponsors.
Sara Heath, CEO of the Global Rugby Players Foundation, underscored the challenges encountered by players as they transition away from the sport and emphasized the foundation’s commitment to reframing the concept of life after rugby as a positive and exciting opportunity for former players.
Omar Hassanein, CEO of International Rugby Players, underscored the pivotal role of the foundation in addressing the needs of elite and professional rugby players globally, particularly in combating the loss of identity and purpose often experienced post-retirement.
Echoing this sentiment, World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin expressed his delight at the establishment of the foundation, reaffirming World Rugby’s unwavering support towards the wellbeing of current and former players.
The inauguration of the Global Rugby Players Foundation represents a significant milestone in the sphere of rugby welfare, presenting a beacon of hope for players as they navigate the transition beyond their playing careers.
