Legendary Coach Bill Beaney to Receive USA Hockey’s Distinguished Achievement Award

The esteemed former Middlebury College men’s ice hockey coach, Bill Beaney, is slated to receive the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award from USA Hockey. This prestigious honour is bestowed upon individuals who have made notable contributions to the sport of hockey in America.

In his impressive 28-year tenure as head coach, Beaney guided the Middlebury men’s ice hockey program to eight NCAA Championships and eight NESCAC titles. His exceptional coaching abilities were further underscored by his four-time recognition with the Edward Jeremiah Award as National Coach of the Year, along with being named the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) National Hockey Coach of the Year in 1989. Upon his decision to step down from his coaching role, Beaney held the remarkable title of the winningest Division III coach with a record of 602-260-59. His career victory total ranks 14th across all three NCAA divisions.

Aside from his contributions at the collegiate level, Beaney also played a pivotal role in coaching at the national level, including his involvement with the United States Junior Olympic and Junior National teams. Additionally, he served as the general manager for the U.S. men’s ice hockey team at the 2023 FISU World University Games.

Beaney began his coaching career in 1974 and continued to leave his mark as head men’s hockey coach at New England College before his impactful tenure at Middlebury. Notably, he also lent his expertise to coaching the men’s golf program at Middlebury, showcasing his versatility as a coach and mentor.

After leading the Middlebury men’s ice hockey team, women’s soccer squad, and men’s golf program, Beaney retired following an illustrious 36-year coaching career at the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year.
