Northampton rugby union fly-half, Fin Smith, has achieved a remarkable season, culminating in his winning of the prestigious Rugby Players’ Association (RPA) Player’s Player of the Year award. This accolade is a testament to Smith’s exceptional performance and significant contributions to the sport.
In addition to Smith’s recognition, Leicester Tigers’ Meg Jones was named the RPA Women’s Player of the Year for her influential role in England’s third consecutive Grand Slam victory.
Smith’s peers acknowledged his impact by casting the most votes in his favour, underscoring the mark he has made on the world of rugby. At just 22 years old, he amassed an impressive 235 points this season, showcasing his talent. Furthermore, he was named in the Premiership’s team of the season alongside fellow club-mates Courtney Lawes, Alex Coles, Curtis Langdon, and Ollie Sleightholme.
In response to receiving the award, Smith expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the significance of recognition from his fellow players and opponents. He also credited his teammates and coaches at Northampton for their role in his success.
Former England flanker Lawes, aged 35, will be departing Northampton for Brive at the end of this season, bringing a poignant conclusion to his time with the club. His outstanding career has earned him a place in the RPA Hall of Fame. Young Player of the Year award was clinched by Exeter wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, and Saracens forward Ben Earl was honoured with the England Men’s Player of the Year award.
On the women’s front, Alex Matthews secured the England Women’s Player of the Year award, and Marlie Packer, captain of the Red Roses, was celebrated with the Special Merit prize for her 100th cap. This is in addition to the recognition of outgoing Northampton prop Alex Waller.
