Shelton State Women’s Basketball Summer Camp Kicks Off

Shelton State University has commenced its summer camp season for young basketball enthusiasts. The women’s basketball team recently concluded a two-day ‘summer skills camp’ with a total of 24 participants between the ages of six and 18. The camp provided a platform for aspiring young players to enhance their basketball skills under the guidance of Shelton State coach Madonna Thompson and the Bucs players.

Shelton State women’s basketball team has solidified its position as one of the premier junior college programs in the United States, consistently making appearances in the NJCAA Division I national tournament for the past eight years. The program’s success has solidified its reputation as a prestigious platform for developing young basketball players.

Coach Thompson is dedicated to more than just refining the participants’ basketball abilities. She prioritizes instilling a genuine passion for the sport within each young athlete. “Obviously I want them to fall in love with basketball. It’s just such a fun game and I just want them to fall in love with the game and learn some basic concepts,” Thompson explained. “We work a lot with the kids on just becoming athletes first. We start out with some basic concepts, that kind of stuff, the passing, the dribbling, shooting. Just start kind of lower level and then build up.”

Due to the success of the recent skills camp, Shelton State women’s basketball has already scheduled another camp to take place on July 22-23. This ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent is a testament to the program’s dedication to the continued development of basketball skills at a grassroots level.

The two days spent at the ‘summer skills camp’ proved to be a valuable experience for the young campers, who were able to learn from some of the most respected figures in the sport. The hands-on approach and personalised coaching from Coach Thompson and members of the Bucs players created an enriching environment for growth and improvement.

In conclusion, the impact of Shelton State women’s basketball in cultivating young talent is a commendable initiative that embodies its mission to foster the next generation of basketball players. The upcoming skills camp promises to provide another exciting opportunity for young athletes to learn, grow, and be inspired by the best in the game.
