Professional golfers Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler have arrived at Pinehurst No. 2 to begin their preparations for the U.S. Open after they were unable to progress in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. In light of their disappointment at the Memorial, both players are eager to regain their form as they look ahead to the third major championship of the year.
After missing the cut in Dublin, Ohio, the United States Ryder Cup teammates wasted no time returning to the course, seen practicing at Pinehurst over the weekend. With a particular emphasis on turning things around, Rickie Fowler will be seeking an improved performance after finishing last at the Memorial Tournament. His start was less than ideal, as he carded a four-over-par 76 in the opening round, followed by a 10-over 82 in the second round, falling short of the weekend cut line by a significant margin.
Conversely, Jordan Spieth finished his first 36 holes at five-over, just one shot away from playing on Saturday and Sunday. The three-time major champion is aiming to recapture the form that earned him the U.S. Open title in 2015 and is setting his sights on major No. 4 at Pinehurst.
In 2015, Spieth secured victory at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, a mere two months after winning the green jacket at the Masters. During the last U.S. Open at Pinehurst in 2014, Spieth finished in a tie for 17th place, while Fowler had his best major result to date, finishing in a tie for second.
As Rickie Fowler is now 35 years old and has yet to break into the top 10 in any event so far in 2024, he will need a change in fortune if he hopes to replicate a similar performance next week during the U.S. Open.
