England vs Serbia: Beer Ban and Safety Measures for Euro 2024 Fans

As the highly anticipated Euros game between England and Serbia approaches, recent reports have surfaced indicating that full-strength beer will not be available for purchase at the stadium. Instead, fans will be offered a weaker German shandy in an effort to prevent potential conflicts between England supporters and Serbian ‘Ultras’. This decision has been made in response to concerns raised by German authorities regarding the security risk posed by the presence of violent Serbian hooligans, with fears that intoxicated England fans could exacerbate the situation.

The security risk for the match, set to take place on Sunday, June 16 at the VELTINS-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, has been raised to ‘very high’. The prohibition of full-strength beer is among the measures being implemented to mitigate the risk of clashes between the two sets of fans. Additionally, authorities are also keen to prevent the potential involvement of 500 pro-Vladimir Putin thugs in the disturbances.

It has been reported that for the upcoming game, the strength of the beer served in the 62,000-seat stadium will be reduced. Instead of the usual Bitburger Premium, fans will be offered a lighter alternative known as ‘Radler-style’. This beverage is a combination of half lager and half citrus soda, with an alcohol content of 2.5 per cent. Furthermore, restrictions will be put in place, with fans being limited to purchasing two pints at a time.

In addition to the alcohol measures, the decision to ban segregation in the stadium has raised concerns about potential confrontations, as rival fans will be seated next to each other. Gelsenkirchen police have expressed apprehension regarding the likelihood of organized groups of Serbia ultras targeting inebriated English fans.

Furthermore, England supporters have been informed of a last-minute alcohol ban in the city, with restrictions on drinking in the main square, Heinrich-Konig-Platz, prior to the 8pm kick-off. Fans will only be permitted to consume alcohol in designated areas, such as the city’s bars and a specified fan zone for England supporters at the racecourse.

It is important to note that the 2016 Euros tournament experienced organized violence from Russian hooligans against English fans in Marseille, France. These incidents have led to speculation about potential state sponsorship of these hooligan groups.

As preparations are underway for the England versus Serbia game, concerns regarding fan safety remain at the forefront of discussions. With a focus on minimizing potential clashes and ensuring the overall security of the event, authorities are taking proactive measures to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for all spectators.
