Controversy Leads to Pembroke Girls Tennis Team Advancing to State Championship

The journey of the Pembroke girls tennis team to the state championship has been marred by controversy and unforeseen events. Following an appeal to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and a decision in their favour, the Titans have secured a place in the state finals, marking a significant milestone for the team.

The ordeal began when the Titans believed they had secured a 3-2 victory over the two-time defending state champion, Newburyport, in the Division 3 semifinals at Sharon High’s courts. However, it was discovered that there had been a misapplication of the playing format, leading to a protest from Newburyport.

The issue revolved around the MIAA-appointed United States Tennis Association official directing the players to participate in a first-to-10-points tiebreaker instead of completing the third set, a breach of MIAA Handbook Rule 81.1.1. Following the protest, the MIAA ruled in favour of Newburyport, requiring Pembroke’s Emma Gerlach and her opponent Bridgette Mellet to return to the courts and play a full third set.

Pembroke’s athletic director, Brian Phillips, expediently lodged an appeal which was subsequently reviewed by MIAA Executive Director Bob Baldwin. After the appeal, the MIAA reversed its decision, consequently permitting Pembroke to progress to the state finals.

In a statement, Phillips conveyed appreciation for the MIAA’s dedication to upholding Handbook rules and ensuring fairness. Coach Jessica Walls also lauded the sportsmanship and respect displayed by the opposing team, Newburyport, despite the contentious situation.

The ruling has led the way for Pembroke to participate in the state finals for the first time in the team’s history. The team’s outstanding season, which included securing their maiden Patriot League Fisher Division title, has been characterized by the exceptional performances of players such as Nicole Makarewicz, Ruth Dannison, and Emma Gerlach.

The team’s determination and unwavering commitment have played a pivotal role in propelling them to the state championship, where they will compete for the title against Weston. The Titans are preparing for the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level on Saturday.

The entire journey has been a testament to the resilience and talent of the Pembroke girls tennis team, and the forthcoming state finals provide an opportunity for them to make a mark in their school’s athletic history.
