A Star-Studded Lineup: Football Legends Bag Major Honours in King’s Birthday Honours

A prestigious group of sports personalities has been honoured in the King’s Birthday Honours list, with several football and rugby veterans receiving top accolades for their exceptional contributions to sports and philanthropy.

Heading the list is former Scotland striker and television pundit Ally McCoist, 61, who has been bestowed with an OBE in recognition of his illustrious career in football and broadcasting. McCoist, renowned for his work as a commentator on TNT Sport and appearances on shows such as A Question of Sport, remains a revered figure in the world of sports.

Also receiving an OBE is Liverpool legend Graeme Souness, 71, for his notable football career and charitable undertakings. Souness, who recently completed a charity swim across the English Channel, has raised over £1m for Debra UK and is committed to continuing his philanthropic efforts.

Former Lioness Karen Carney, 36, has been honoured with an OBE for her outstanding football career, while former England defender Chris Powell, 54, and retired rugby referee Wayne Barnes, 45, have also been recognised with OBEs for their respective contributions to football and rugby.

Pioneering figure Patricia Gregory, a founding member of the Women’s Football Association, has been acknowledged for her ground-breaking efforts in women’s football. Additionally, retired sprinter Doris “Anita” Neil, 74, has been awarded an OBE for her trailblazing accomplishments as the first black British woman Olympian in 1968.

The most prestigious honour of all has been bestowed upon ‘Manx Missile’ Mark Cavendish, the most successful men’s sprint cyclist of all time, who has been knighted for his remarkable career and achievements in cycling.

The Isle of Man’s Chief Minister, Alfred Cannan MHK, commended Sir Mark’s exceptional talent and praised him as an inspiration for both the sport and the Isle of Man, where he hails from. He highlighted Cavendish’s dedication and determination as a testament to the island’s commitment to nurturing exceptional talents in cycling.
