It is with profound grief that Scottish Hockey announces the passing of Jim Shepherd, a revered and cherished figure within the hockey community. Jim’s profound influence on the sport as a player, organizer, and media contributor will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Wanderers,” Jim’s hockey odyssey commenced in 1954 at the Boys Brigade International Founder’s Camp, and he officially became a member of Dundee Wanderers in 1958. His fervor for the sport was ignited while working at the Bonar Long Drawing Office, described as a ‘hotbed of hockey’, which led to his inaugural game at HMS Condor. Subsequently, Jim’s ardor for hockey only flourished as he assumed pivotal roles at Dundee Wanderers, serving as secretary, treasurer, and match secretary. Furthermore, he made noteworthy contributions to both Scottish Hockey and Midland District, dedicating himself to the sport as a hockey correspondent for the Dundee newspapers.
In homage to his lifelong dedication, Jim’s extensive hockey archives were bequeathed to Dundee University, ensuring that his legacy in the sport will endure through his munificent contribution.
The funeral service for Jim Shepherd is scheduled for Wednesday, 19th June at 12:30pm at Dundee Crematorium. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s family and friends during this arduous time.
