Andy Murray has announced his intention to represent Great Britain in the men’s singles tennis event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, denoting his fifth appearance at the prestigious games.
The two-time gold medallist will be accompanied by Olympic debutants Jack Draper, Cam Norrie, and Dan Evans in the men’s singles competition. Katie Boulter will serve as the lone representative for Great Britain in the women’s singles event, as Emma Raducanu declined a wild card entry to Roland-Garros.
In the men’s doubles event, Murray and Evans are set to partner with Tokyo 2020 Olympians Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury. On the other hand, Boulter and three-time Olympian Heather Watson will join forces in the women’s doubles, together with Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden.
While the mixed doubles line-ups have not yet been finalised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the prospect of Murray’s involvement has generated significant anticipation, particularly following his declaration earlier this year regarding limited future participation in the sport.
There had been conjecture surrounding Emma Raducanu’s participation, with the 2021 US Open champion declining the opportunity to compete at Roland-Garros due to her low world ranking, necessitating qualification for the event.
Iain Bates, leader of the British Lawn Tennis Association Olympic team, expressed his understanding of Raducanu’s decision, acknowledging that the current timing may not be opportune for her. He highlighted the importance of being part of a British team at the Olympics, suggesting that she may have subsequent opportunities.
Murray, renowned for his outstanding performances at previous Olympic Games, conveyed his enthusiasm for competing in Paris. Having secured the men’s singles title at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, Murray aims to etch his name in history as one of the select few to partake in singles at five Olympic Games.
With the confirmation of his participation, the tennis community fervently anticipates Murray’s display at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
