As the highly anticipated 2024 Paris Olympics approach, the recent conclusion of the U.S. Open marked the end of the qualifying period for the golf competition scheduled to take place from August 1 to 4 at Le Golf National. It is of note that U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau will not be among the contenders representing the United States in Paris. Despite his impressive performances at the year’s major championships, including a T6 at the Masters, a second-place finish at the PGA Championship, and a victory at Pinehurst No. 2, DeChambeau did not qualify due to his participation in a circuit (LIV Golf) that does not award Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points.
The Olympic Golf Rankings primarily rely on the Official World Golf Rankings, with the top 15 players being eligible to compete. No more than four players can be selected from a single nation. Players outside the top 15 are also eligible based on world rankings, with a maximum of two players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.
Representing the United States at the Olympics will be Scottie Scheffler (No. 1 OWGR), Xander Schauffele (No. 3), Wyndham Clark (No. 5), and Collin Morikawa (No. 7). Notably, Xander Schauffele, the reigning gold medalist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will be competing for Team USA along with Morikawa for the second time. Almost snatching the final spot was Patrick Cantlay, who required a top-two finish at the U.S. Open to qualify but ended up finishing in a tie for third place.
The U.S. team was not the only squad to experience changes in its roster following the U.S. Open. Canada’s final spot saw fierce competition among Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, and Adam Hadwin, with Conners ultimately earning the coveted spot to represent Canada in Paris.
Several other countries including Ireland, Spain, Japan, Sweden, and Norway have also finalized their representatives for the 2024 Olympic Games. Notable golf stars from these countries include Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, and Hideki Matsuyama.
It is indeed exciting to see these talented athletes from various countries prepare to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This year’s Olympic golf competition is anticipated to showcase some exceptional talent and fierce competition from across the globe. We eagerly await the showdown on the green as these elite golfers vie for victory and glory for their respective nations.
