The Ireland Men’s and Women’s Sevens squads for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris have been formally approved by Team Ireland. Head Coaches James Topping and Allan Temple-Jones have announced their 12-player squads for the upcoming tournament, marking a significant moment for the Ireland Sevens programme. The Rugby Sevens tournament is scheduled to take place at the Stade de France from 24th to 30th July.
Harry McNulty, a double Olympian, has been named as the captain of the Ireland Men’s squad, while Lucy Rock will lead the Ireland Women as they prepare for their inaugural Olympic appearance. Following an impressive HSBC SVNS Series season, which resulted in a second-place finish in the overall standings, the Ireland Men’s team is set to compete in the sport’s premier event once again, following their Olympic debut in Tokyo.
The Men’s squad features familiar faces such as Hugo Keenan and Andrew Smith, who have been reintegrated into the programme. Additionally, Niall Comerford, Chay Mullins, and Zac Ward are also set to make their Olympic debuts.
On the Women’s side, key players such as Ashleigh Orchard and Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe have been selected, alongside Kathy Baker who has made a strong comeback from a long-term knee injury. The Women’s squad will also include teenager Alanna Fitzpatrick, who made her senior debut last summer.
Looking forward to the historic campaign, Rock expressed her excitement, acknowledging the hard work, determination, and sacrifice that has led to this moment. Ireland Sevens Performance Director, David Nucifora, also shared his pride and excitement, highlighting the dedication, talent, and resilience of the players and staff in the Ireland Sevens programme.
Both squads will continue their preparations at the IRFU High Performance Centre before embarking on a 10-day training camp in Tours in July. The Pool draws for the Rugby Sevens tournaments will take place on 23 June.
