The 2024 All-Gainesville Area Boys Tennis Team has been officially announced by The Gainesville Sun, with a young and promising talent emerging as the Player of the Year. Owen Van Boven, the standout freshman from PK Yonge, has not only excelled in the local tennis scene but has also made a significant impact at the state level, showcasing his remarkable talent in both singles and doubles events.
Being a tennis prodigy is quite a feat, and Van Boven has had the advantage of having a supportive and knowledgeable coach in the form of his father, Ross Van Boven, a UF alum with extensive coaching experience. In addition to Van Boven’s outstanding performance, the All-Gainesville Area Boys Tennis Team also includes 14 other exceptional players from various schools in the Gainesville area. The first team consists of seven remarkable players, including Patrick Dong from Gainesville High, Ayden Gallogly from Oak Hall, Leal Hogan-Grant from Buchholz, Bryson Ko from Eastside, Phillip Matchev from Buchholz, Owen Van Boven from PK Yonge, and Jacob Zeig from Buchholz. These individuals have shown incredible skill and sportsmanship, making them worthy of their positions on the first team.
The second team also includes seven talented players, with notable mentions such as Isaiah Bayton and Asher Case from PK Yonge, Matyas Krupicka from PK Yonge, Barrett Mitchell and Michael Peters from Buchholz, Michael Sourakov from Eastside, and Amish Veerpaneni from Oak Hall. Furthermore, the Coach of the Year title was awarded to Robert Taylor of Buchholz, who led the Bobcats to an impressive team state appearance, marking a significant milestone for the school’s tennis program.
