The much-anticipated refurbishment of the Quarry Road Tennis Courts in Swindon has been officially completed, allowing members of the public to book and enjoy the facilities. Despite encountering delays due to flooding issues, the South Swindon Parish Council has confirmed that the courts are now open for use.
The £140,000 refurbishment project, commissioned by the parish council, was funded by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA – Tennis For Britain) and the parish council. However, heavy rainwater caused significant delays in the completion of the project, leaving the public eager to make use of the revitalised courts.
After facing setbacks due to flooding, major drainage works were initiated in March, nearly eight months after the initial refurbishment in July 2023. The tennis courts, situated in one of the lowest points in Old Town, had suffered from water run-off from the Town Gardens, necessitating extensive remedial works.
Neil Hopkins, chair of South Swindon Parish Council, expressed the council’s satisfaction with the progress made, acknowledging the frustration experienced by residents eager to use the courts. “We are pleased to share that after a lengthy process of assessing the drainage problems and finding an appropriate contractor, work has commenced to properly address the standing water and other drainage challenges faced at the site,” said Hopkins.
The courts, previously managed by Swindon Borough Council before being transferred to the parish council, had become ‘unplayable’, as they were sinking into the ground and riddled with potholes. Despite hopes of opening in time for Wimbledon in July 2023, the courts had to undergo further remedial work to rectify the drainage issues, eventually resulting in their recent reopening.
Members of the public can now book the Quarry Road tennis courts through the National Tennis Association’s website, indicating the resumption of a popular activity in the area. The completion of the refurbishment project signifies an important milestone for the local community, providing a venue for residents to engage in sports and recreation.
In conclusion, the successful renovation and reopening of the Quarry Road Tennis Courts have been met with widespread relief and enthusiasm from the Swindon community. The efforts of the South Swindon Parish Council, in collaboration with the Lawn Tennis Association, have restored a valuable recreational facility for the public to enjoy. It is hoped that the refurbished courts will serve as a place for residents to engage in physical activity, socialise, and foster a spirit of community togetherness.
