A man from Renfrewshire is preparing for an extraordinary challenge as he plans to engage in non-stop tennis for an impressive 24 hours. However, this is not just any ordinary challenge – it is all in aid of raising funds for the construction of an all-weather tennis court in Podujeva Peace Park, Kosovo.
David Bryceland, an alumnus of Trinity High, first became aware of the plight of Kosovan refugees during his time at school. His passion for assisting the local community in Kosovo was ignited when he met teenage refugee Saranda Boguievci through a member of the Altrincham tennis club, after he relocated to England.
Motivated by his love for tennis and a desire to make a difference, David has previously raised funds for Manchester Aid to Kisivo (MAK) by participating in triathlons, 10ks, and half marathons. His efforts have managed to raise an impressive £16,000 for the charity, with his most recent accomplishment being the completion of the Manchester half marathon alongside his wife Becky.
When not occupied with fundraising, David organizes volunteer groups to work in summer clubs in Kosovo. These groups, comprising teenagers from around the Altrincham area, assist in teaching the local children how to play tennis, even in the absence of proper facilities. His experience has been enlightening, as he witnessed the lack of leisure facilities and the dire conditions of the buildings in the area.
As a coach at Hale Village Tennis Club and Bowdon Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club, David is determined to address the lack of sports facilities in Kosovo. He believes that sports, particularly tennis, can have a tremendous impact on the lives of the local children. Through his volunteer work, he has seen firsthand the positive influence of introducing tennis to the community, and he remains committed to the cause.
Despite the challenges, David is optimistic that this fundraising effort will be the final push needed to complete the tennis court. He acknowledges the tremendous support he has received from the local community in Altrincham, expressing his hope that the forthcoming challenge will raise the remaining £5000 needed to fulfill the project. If the fundraising exceeds the target, the surplus funds will be allocated for the purchase of essential equipment such as racquets and balls.
David’s journey towards this ambitious fundraising challenge has not been without its setbacks. He was previously hospitalized with exhaustion and dehydration after a similar attempt in 2019. However, he has since built up his stamina and adopted a more cautious approach to hydration, feeling confident in his ability to conquer this challenge.
The commitment and dedication displayed by David Bryceland in his efforts to support the community in Kosovo are truly inspiring. His passion for tennis and his desire to effect meaningful change are admirable, and his unwavering determination is a testament to the impact that individuals can have on society.
As David prepares for this incredible marathon, we have the opportunity to rally behind him and contribute to a cause that will make a real difference in the lives of others. Let’s support David in his mission to bring the joy of tennis to the children in Kosovo.
