The professional at Alderley Edge Golf Club wishes to commend the exceptional performance of the team in the Manchester and District Golf Alliance Dunham Forest Trophy. The team’s impressive victory against Chorley Golf Club has secured their position in the last 16 of the competition.
The competition involved the scratch team and the professional playing singles match-play against the opposing team. Chorley’s team consisted of lower handicappers, each receiving shots. Due to a shortage of available players, Andy Slater, Matt Spiller, and Hansel Allen had to play off a handicap of six, despite their higher indices.
In a remarkable turn of events, Andy narrowly lost, while Matt emerged victorious, and Hansel narrowly lost as well. This meant that the team needed to secure three out of the last four matches to clinch the overall victory. Simon McSweeney delivered another win with a score of 5 and 4. Although Ed Lawton lost on the 19th, vice-captain Harry Sexton’s 3 and 2 win, along with the professional’s 4 and 2 win, sealed a 4-3 victory for AEGC.
Charles le Sueur, the club’s professional, expressed his pride, stating, “We are now into the last 16, the furthest we have progressed in this competition in my 12 years here. A great achievement for a club of our size! We have drawn Denton GC in the next round away from home.”
Additionally, the President’s Prize at Alderley was claimed by Steve Bell, with a score of 39, narrowly edging out Richard Craven and Andrew Slater. The women’s competition was won by Jo Pratt after a card play-off, closely followed by Lesley Fowler and Sue Kendrick. Liz McGuire emerged victorious in the nine-hole category.
At Styal Golf Club, Pat Chadwick emerged as the winner of the women’s stableford, with a score of 33 after a card play-off with Helen Billington. Jenny Merren claimed victory in the nine-hole category.
The seniors singles at Styal saw Stephen Atherton and David Woodgate leading in their respective divisions. The Friday Frolics at Styal resulted in David Ramsden on top with 20, followed by Charlie Thompson with 19.
In the Foursomes for the Aquilla Trophy, J Cook and R Carter secured the top spot with a score of 62.0, showcasing an impressive performance.
The recent achievements of the golf clubs have undoubtedly showcased the talent and dedication of the players. The spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork has been exceptionally demonstrated, reflecting positively on the clubs and the community as a whole. The anticipation for the upcoming matches is palpable, and the clubs can undoubtedly look forward to more thrilling competitions in the future.
