The recent U13 Boys regional tournament at the Nottingham Hockey Centre has been lauded as a significant success as it approaches its 30th year, as reported by Mark Darlington.

Organized by the North East of England School and Youth Hockey Association, the tournament showcased 10 teams in the Championship and an additional 10 teams in the Trophy competition over a span of three days.

The competition during the pool stages was intense, with closely contested games as each team gave their all to overcome their opponents. South Wales made an impressive debut in the Championship, and excitement surrounded the return of BAHA. Additionally, teams such as Mercian Marauders, Anglian Eagles, Saxons, and Tensworth delivered commendable performances.

The tournament exemplified junior hockey at its finest, providing an enthralling experience for the supportive parents and spectators in attendance. The Championship semi-finals were particularly intense, with West Panthers emerging victorious against Ulster, and South Saxons narrowly defeating the North East.

The success of the entire event was made possible by the fantastic support of the umpires and officials, who are also known as the Leeds Club. The contributions of the officials were integral to the tournament, as they provided exceptional support for all the players on the pitch.

Given the high level of talent on display from across the UK, it comes as no surprise that all the games were fiercely contested.

In the final, South Saxons emerged triumphant, securing the Championship title by defeating West Panthers, while North East finished in third place and Ulster in fourth.

In the Trophy competition, Midland Marauders emerged victorious over Ulster, with North East securing third place and Tensworth finishing in fourth.

The standout players of the tournament were also recognized, with Kinan Al Shamaa from South Wales named as the outfield player of the Championship tournament, and Austin Skinner from Anglian Eagles receiving the accolade of Goalkeeper of the tournament.

In the Trophy tournament, Sam McCloud Smith from Trent Raiders was named as the outstanding outfield player, while Sam Ritchie from NI Giants was awarded the title of Goalkeeper of the tournament.

Looking ahead, the girls U13 tournament is set to take place on July 12-14 at the Nottingham Hockey Centre.
