Tatenda Makoni, a 31-year-old tennis coach from Hatfield, has been honoured with the Game Changer in the Community Award at the Tennis Black List Awards for his exceptional efforts in advocating for inclusivity within the tennis community. This prestigious accolade recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to grassroots tennis across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Makoni, who serves as a coach at Gosling Sports Park, expressed his pride in receiving the award, stating, “I feel proud, the hard work is getting noticed. There’s a lot of work done behind the events and cameras, these awards give me the boost to carry on the hard work.” He emphasized the importance of believing in one’s abilities and not allowing any barriers to hinder personal aspirations. Makoni has been pivotal in organizing two national tennis tournaments for individuals with visual impairments and learning difficulties, in collaboration with the LTA.
This year’s Tennis Black List Awards, founded by Anne-Marie Batson and Richard Sackey-Addo, celebrated role models from the black and mixed black heritage community, acknowledging their immense contributions to the sport. The event, supported by the LTA, Barclays, and YC Sports, aims to honour individuals and organisations at all levels of tennis, from grassroots initiatives to professional achievements.
The Tennis Black List, following the example of the successful Football Black List and Rugby Black List, is a testament to the significance of celebrating excellence and diversity within the world of sports. It serves as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of tennis enthusiasts, highlighting the commitment and dedication demonstrated by the winners both on and off the court.
LTA Chief Executive Scott Lloyd commended the winners for their inspiring successes and achievements, emphasizing the importance of role models in encouraging more people to engage with the sport. He stated, “Our vision at the LTA is for tennis to be welcoming, enjoyable and inspiring to everyone. We know that seeing and celebrating the success of role models, inspires and encourages more people to get involved – whether as a player, a coach or a volunteer.”
The Tennis Black List Awards continue to play a pivotal role in promoting diversity, inclusivity, and excellence within the tennis community. They serve as a platform to honour remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport and are an inspiration to aspiring tennis players, coaches, and volunteers alike.
