Revamped Tennis Courts at Blackwood Showfields Open After Major Renovation

The esteemed tennis courts at Blackwood Showfields have undergone a comprehensive £378,000 transformation project, representing the largest upgrade of park tennis facilities in Britain. This ambitious initiative, which entailed the refurbishment of 18 tennis courts at six different locations, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Caerphilly County Borough Council.

The grand reopening of the Blackwood Showfields courts was met with enthusiasm from local officials and LTA members, who united to host engaging tennis sessions for community members. The extensive renovation encompassed resurfacing, repainting, and the installation of new fencing, nets, and gate systems, all with the aim of ensuring the longevity and top-notch quality of the courts for years to come.

In addition to the physical upgrades, the Blackwood Showfields courts will host weekly Barclays free park tennis sessions, with equipment readily provided. Furthermore, the courts will also be home to local tennis leagues, providing opportunities for friendly and social competition among tennis enthusiasts.

Rob Hartshorn, the head of community and leisure services at the council, articulated his enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the community: “These newly refurbished courts are a fantastic addition to our community. They provide a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy tennis and stay active.”

Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle: “Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis.”

As the courts become available for public use, individuals are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the booking process and consider becoming members to fully enjoy the revamped facilities. Those interested can obtain more information on court reservations and membership by downloading the Leisure Lifestyle app or visiting the council’s official website.

With the successful completion of this extensive renovation project, residents and tennis enthusiasts alike can look forward to making the most of the improved facilities at Blackwood Showfields and other locations across Caerphilly. The upgraded courts are poised to provide a welcoming and inclusive space where individuals of all skill levels can come together to partake in the timeless sport of tennis.
