Remembering Lowell Barnhart: A Tribute to a Legend in Augusta Athletics

The Augusta Athletics community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Lowell Barnhart, the former head coach of the women’s basketball and men’s soccer teams. Mr. Barnhart, who passed away at the age of 91, leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sporting world.

Hailing from Syracuse, Indiana, Mr. Barnhart had a remarkable career both in sports and in service to his country. After serving in the U.S. Army, he joined the Dodgers farm system in 1955, where he achieved the prestigious 1960 Silver Glove Award. Prior to his tenure at Augusta, he also held the position of Athletic Director at Curtis Baptist High School.

Mr. Barnhart’s impact on Augusta Athletics was truly profound. From 1986 to 1999, he served as the head women’s basketball coach at Augusta College, now known as Augusta University. His leadership and coaching prowess led to numerous accolades, including being named PBC Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995. Under his guidance, the team achieved an outstanding 23-6 overall record, as well as securing both the PBC Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title and PBC Tournament Title. Moreover, fourteen women’s basketball players earned the esteemed title of all-conference during his tenure.

In addition to his basketball achievements, Mr. Barnhart also made significant contributions as the head men’s golf coach at Augusta College from 1985 to 1995. His dedication to nurturing sporting talent across multiple disciplines truly underscores his remarkable legacy.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Barnhart was an avid golfer and a valued member of the Forest Hills Golf Course for many years. His passion for the sport extended beyond the court and field, showcasing his multifaceted love for athletics.
