In an unforeseen development, the Boston Police intervened during a basketball tournament at Malcolm X Park on Wednesday evening, resulting in the apprehension of two 18-year-olds and the confiscation of a concealed firearm. Anthony Diaz from Malden and Braxten Baker from Brockton were both detained by the Youth Violence Strike Force at approximately 9:36 PM, and it was undercover officers who had been surveilling the event who facilitated the arrests.
The officers’ suspicions were initially aroused when they observed the conduct of Diaz and Baker, who seemed disinterested in the game and overly attentive to the police presence. Subsequent observations led to the conclusion that Diaz might be armed, prompting him to attempt an early departure from the tournament and then flee when approached by the police.
Fortunately, Diaz was swiftly apprehended after a brief pursuit, during which officers found a firearm concealed in his clothing. On the other hand, Baker interfered with Diaz’s arrest, resulting in his own arrest for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
The recovered weapon was identified as a black Ruger semi-automatic handgun with a defaced serial number and a laser attachment. The firearm was loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine. Diaz now faces multiple charges, including illegal possession and carrying of a firearm, and is scheduled to appear in the Roxbury District Court.
