3rd Annual Memorial Hockey Tournament Pays Tribute to Surrey Teen

The 3rd annual Memorial Hockey Tournament, held in honour of Ronin Sharma, a Surrey teenager tragically killed in a car crash, will take place at a new location this year. The tournament is scheduled to occur at Planet Ice Coquitlam, 2300 Rocket Way, Coquitlam, from Friday to Sunday (July 19-21).

According to the tournament’s website, the event, featuring seven divisions, aims to celebrate Sharma’s passion for hockey by providing a fun, fair, and safe platform for the hockey community.

The tragic accident, which occurred on August 21, 2021, resulted in the loss of Sharma and his friends and Delta Hockey Academy teammates, Parker Magnuson and Caleb Reimer, on 104 Avenue in the Fraser Heights area. In memory of Sharma, the Ronin Sharma Foundation and the hockey tournament were established.

The foundation was formed to uphold Sharma’s legacy and support others in pursuing their dreams. The website states, “The Ronin Sharma Foundation has been established to honour his legacy by helping others achieve their dreams. Through fundraising, bursaries, scholarships, and additional aid, we will help those in the community that need it most.”

To date, the foundation has allocated over $26,000 through scholarships, financial assistance, and equipment provision. At the upcoming tournament, several individuals will be presented with the prestigious Ronin Sharma Memorial scholarship, according to an email from Jessica Sharma to the Now-Leader.

By organizing the Ronin Sharma Memorial Tournament and supporting the foundation, the community comes together to commemorate the life of a remarkable young individual and ensure that his spirit lives on through acts of kindness and support.

The event not only serves as a tribute to Sharma’s memory but also contributes to the community through the financial aid and opportunities offered by the foundation. It provides a platform for healing, remembrance, and an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of aspiring individuals.

The Ronin Sharma Memorial Tournament stands as a testament to the power of sport and community coming together to keep alive the legacy of a beloved individual. As the tournament moves to a new location, we can expect it to continue to serve as a source of hope and support for the hockey community. It is more than just a hockey tournament; it is a heartwarming initiative that embodies the essence of camaraderie, support, and paying homage to an exceptional individual.

The tournament not only celebrates Sharma’s love for hockey but also commemorates his life and the positive impact he had on those around him. Through this celebration, the community fondly remembers a young life filled with promise, and the foundation’s continued efforts ensure that Sharma’s legacy endures and continues to touch the lives of others.

As the 3rd annual Ronin Sharma Memorial Tournament approaches, it serves as a poignant reminder that from tragedy, light and hope emerge. The tournament extends its reach to embrace the wider community, fostering a spirit of togetherness and support.
