Olukai, a renowned footwear brand hailing from Hawaii, has been generating significant interest within the golf shoe industry as of late. I recently had the opportunity to evaluate their latest offering, the Mākena, and I must confess that I was thoroughly impressed. The refined and understated design of the shoe immediately caught my attention, and coupled with its commitment to waterproofing and exceptional traction, I was eager to put it to the test on the golf course.
Upon receipt of the white sand iteration of the shoe, I was pleased with its understated yet sporty appearance. The minimal branding and subtle navy accents imparted a clean and stylish aesthetic. The cloth mesh upper felt both breathable and of high quality, a surprising feat for a waterproof shoe. The Mākena’s aesthetic perfectly encapsulates Olukai’s signature style, underscoring the brand’s expertise in crafting golf footwear.
What sets the Mākena apart from its predecessor, the Wai’alae, is the inclusion of the ‘Locked-In-Traction’ feature. This plated outsole provides enhanced stability, even in damp conditions, and the sole’s contoured design, inspired by ocean currents, aims to improve grip. During my test rounds, these claims proved to be substantiated – I experienced no slips, even in the morning dew, and my socks remained dry throughout. Furthermore, the shoe proved to be exceedingly breathable, even on a scorching day in Portugal, attesting to its versatility for year-round wear.
The cushioned midsole of the Mākena delivered a comfortable walking experience, albeit slightly firmer than its predecessor, the Wai’alae. Nonetheless, the overall stability and performance of the Mākena overshadowed its precursor, rendering it a top choice for numerous golfers. The shoe is available in three colour options for men and two for women, thus offering a varied selection to consumers.
Olukai’s dedication to delivering both high-calibre and fashionable footwear is clearly evident within the Mākena, rendering it a brand well worth considering for those seeking a divergence from conventional golf shoe fashion.
