The USTA recently unveiled the main-draw entry list for the impending 2024 US Open, marking the culmination of the season’s Grand Slam events. Headlining the entry list are the current World No.1, Iga Swiatek, and the defending champion, Coco Gauff, who holds the No.2 position. The tournament is poised to commence on Monday, August 26 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Entrance into the US Open is determined by the PIF WTA Rankings as of Monday, July 15, with seedings based on the rankings the week prior to the main-draw play. A total of 96 players, notably including Sara Errani from Italy, have earned direct entry based on their rankings.
In addition to the direct entrants, eight players have utilized their special ranking to secure direct entry into the tournament. These players include Ajla Tomljanovic, Zhang Shuai, Shelby Rogers, Lauren Davis, Julia Grabher, Kateryna Baindl, Zheng Saisai, and Wang Qiang.
However, prominent players such as former No.1 Naomi Osaka and 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu find themselves on the alternate list after failing to meet the main-draw cut-off. Notably, former champion Angelique Kerber is also absent from the alternate list. These players will have the opportunity to enter the main draw through the use of wild cards, participation in qualifying matches, or by moving into the main draw in the event of withdrawals prior to the start of the qualifying rounds.
The 2024 US Open is poised to boast a star-studded lineup, comprising 128 players, including 16 qualifiers who will round out the field. Furthermore, this year’s US Open theme art has been unveiled, heightening excitement surrounding the event.
The US Open is set to follow a series of tennis events, including the Paris 2024 Olympics and the National Bank Open and Western & Southern Open in Toronto and Cincinnati, respectively.
Notably, Coco Gauff enjoyed a remarkable season last year, securing victories at prestigious tournaments such as the WTA 500, Mubadala Citi DC Open, and the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, culminating in her maiden Grand Slam triumph at the US Open.
The release of the entry list has sparked fervent excitement among tennis enthusiasts, casting the spotlight squarely on the 2024 US Open as players prepare to demonstrate their skills and vie for the coveted title.
