Former Wales and British & Irish Lions player Jonathan Davies is currently contemplating the possibility of transitioning to Super Rugby following his departure from the Scarlets. At 36 years of age and with 95 international caps to his name, Davies has expressed his determination to continue playing and is actively exploring opportunities overseas. During a recent appearance on the Kick Offs and Kick Ons podcast, Davies articulated his interest in joining Super Rugby, stating his eagerness to “give it a go.”
Having previously garnered international experience in France with Clermont, Davies is now in search of a fresh challenge. He articulated, “No, I’m not at the Scarlets. I’m currently unemployed or in ‘funemployment’, enjoying that at the moment. Hopefully I can find a club because I would like to play on. If I can find an opportunity to play somewhere I would definitely give it a go. I would probably look to move out of Welsh rugby, definitely. That’s a tough gig at the moment boys, I have to say. We are not in a great spot and I think it could take a long time to get to where we were and want to be. For me, it’s not abandon ship as such, but I’m looking forward to a new opportunity.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the prospect of playing in Super Rugby, Davies added, “I’d love to give it a go. The opportunity to travel is one of the best things about rugby is that it’s given me the chance to see the world. To be able to live in a foreign country and play rugby, I did it in France. To do it again – I would definitely consider it. Super Rugby is pretty quick at the moment! At 36, I would probably hang in there, just about. It’s always good to watch, I’ve always watched it [but] I don’t want to hang myself out to dry!”
Davies, who made his debut in 2009, has participated in numerous Six Nations Championships and Rugby World Cups. Over the course of his career, he has secured 16 tries for Wales and has proudly represented the British and Irish Lions, earning eight caps across two tours. Undoubtedly, his wealth of experience and expertise would make him an invaluable asset to any team.
While Davies ponders his next career move, rugby enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the upcoming World Rugby U20s Championship, which can be viewed live and free of charge on RugbyPass TV. Regrettably, the championship is unavailable in certain regions, including Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga.
Jonathan Davies’ potential venture into Super Rugby could mark an exciting new phase in his illustrious career. As he remains open to opportunities abroad, fans will undoubtedly be eager to witness the next chapter in this accomplished player’s journey.
