The recent culmination of the 2024 Shaolin Games Finals at the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province, Central China, saw 144 martial arts masters from 47 countries compete for the esteemed title of “2024 World Shaolin Kung Fu Star.” This global event highlighted the universal appeal and deep-rooted philosophy of Shaolin Kung Fu.
Abbot Shi Yongxin of the Shaolin Temple underscored that Shaolin culture has captivated individuals worldwide, each with their unique affinity and comprehension of the discipline. Luis Mello from Brazil, a seasoned martial artist with over four decades of experience, embodied Shaolin culture through his mastery of various martial arts, founding of the Instituto Lohan in Brazil, and immersion in Chinese traditional arts and philosophy.
The event also witnessed the remarkable demonstration by Clément Vaudagne from France, an 18-year-old whose Drunken Fist routine captivated the audience with its intricate techniques and fluid movements.
Vaudagne’s master, Alexandre Cordaro, also known as Yan Yi, recounted his personal journey of being influenced by Shaolin discipline and philosophy since childhood. Cordaro, now a revered Shaolin Kung Fu practitioner in France, emphasized the significance of self-discipline, restraint, and the spiritual elements inherent in the practice.
Additionally, the competition showcased exceptional talent from Africa, including 6-year-old Fair Nvirenda, affectionately known as Chu San, who displayed exceptional martial arts prowess and a composed demeanor. His master, Max Yollando, known as Yan Ming, shared his journey of being captivated by Chinese culture and Shaolin Kung Fu from a young age, ultimately becoming an influential figure in the Shaolin Temple in Zambia, committed to nurturing young orphans through Kung Fu and Chinese education.
