Professional Golfer Laurie Canter Sets Sights on PGA Tour Qualification
Former LIV Golf star Laurie Canter has turned his attention towards qualifying for the PGA Tour following a less-than-ideal experience with the breakaway circuit. Canter, who participated in seven out of the eight events of the LIV setup in 2022, was later called up as a reserve to replace Sam Horsfield for the Majesticks in the following season. Despite initially playing in the first two LIV events of 2024 as a wildcard, Canter has since returned to the DP World Tour, where he has achieved considerable success.
His successful return to the DP World Tour includes three top-10 finishes this season, culminating in his first-ever victory at the European Open in June. This series of accomplishments has led to a rise in the DP World Tour rankings, positioning Canter favourably for securing a place on the PGA Tour for 2025. Presently holding one of the top 10 spots on the Race to Dubai list, Canter has the opportunity to further solidify his position at The Open Championship this week.
Securing a PGA Tour card would mark a historic achievement for Canter, as no player has successfully made the transition from competing in LIV to obtaining PGA Tour membership. When asked about his aspirations for the PGA Tour, Canter expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “That would be awesome, wouldn’t it, to play on the PGA TOUR is something I would love to do at some point.” Nevertheless, he remains grounded, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead in the second half of the year.
Reflecting on his experience with LIV, Canter recognized that while it did not unfold as he had hoped, the opportunity allowed him to grow as a golfer by competing alongside some of the best players in the world. He attributes his time with LIV for contributing to his advancement and development as a professional golfer and believes that both LIV and traditional golf formats can coexist harmoniously.
