Celebrating 150 Years of the Oldest Amateur Rugby League Club in the World

Millom Rugby League Football Club, the oldest amateur rugby league club in the world, is preparing to conclude a year of celebrations to honour its 150th anniversary. The culminating event is scheduled for Saturday, 2nd December, commencing at 7:00pm.

Since its establishment in 1873, the club has devoted the past year to commemorating this significant milestone. Craig Evans, the chairman of the club, articulated, “We designated all our home games for this season with a heritage title, such as the Founding Fathers of MRLFC match, accompanied by a historical presentation in remembrance of past events and individuals.”

The forthcoming event is poised to be a momentous occasion, aimed at uniting former and current players for an exhilarating reunion. Attendees will have the opportunity to reconnect with their teammates and reminisce about their experiences on the field.

Throughout the past year, each match has shed light on various facets of the club’s storied history. This encompassed paying homage to the Millom players who perished in World War One, as well as commemorating the historical grounds upon which the club has competed. Matches were also dedicated to acknowledging international and professional players who have represented Millom, as well as the numerous volunteers who have devoted their time to sustain the club over the years.

Mr Evans elaborated, “We are set to have five speakers at the evening event on Saturday, comprising former players recounting their era, personalities, and experiences at the club, with questions from the audience.” Furthermore, there will be a presentation of letters from both the King and the Prime Minister, extending congratulations to the club on its remarkable milestone.

The anniversary season has proven to be a resounding triumph for Millom, culminating in a third-place finish in the league, with the club only two points behind the winners. In an exhilarating play-off final, Millom earned a promotion by triumphing over Leigh East at home. The season also witnessed the club achieving an unblemished record at home and fielding three Tongan players.

Mr Evans conveyed his appreciation to Aggregate Industries, the sponsor of Saturday’s event, for their support and contribution.

The 150th-anniversary festivities have been a testament to the club’s tenacity, resilience, and illustrious history. As the oldest amateur rugby league club in the world, Millom Rugby League Football Club has demonstrated its enduring legacy and the profound impact it has had on the sport over the past 150 years. Here’s to the club and its ongoing success in the years ahead!
