Layton High’s boys basketball team achieved a remarkable victory over Northridge on Friday night, with a final score of 65-63. The game was a tense and closely contested affair, with Layton enjoying a nine-point lead at halftime, only to fall behind by six points in the fourth quarter.
Interestingly, it was not the senior star player Mekhi Martin who led Layton’s comeback, but rather two underclassmen – junior forward Sam Romer and junior center Josh Checketts. Checketts made a significant impact by scoring 11 points in the final 5:37 of the game, while Romer’s game-winning 3-pointer in the last 5.5 seconds sealed the victory for Layton.
Romer’s decisive play was not even intended for him, but he rose to the occasion when given the opportunity. According to him, “I was wide-open and just knocked the shot down. I knew there was a good chance (to take the shot) because in previous games, our best guys have been denied, so I’ve had shots … I need to make them if you want to win games.”
The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Layton initially taking a significant lead in the first half, only for Northridge to make a remarkable comeback in the third quarter. However, with a remarkable display of skill and determination, Layton ultimately secured the win.
Coach Kelby Miller commended the team’s resilience, specifically highlighting Romer’s and Checketts’ performances. Romer played a crucial role in keeping Layton in the game even during challenging moments.
The victory was the result of a collective effort, with notable performances from several players. Martin finished the game with 19 points, while KJ Miller contributed 16, including four 3-pointers. Checketts and Romer also scored 11 points each, with Checketts’ performance being particularly noteworthy as he scored all 11 points in the final quarter.
On the other hand, Northridge’s senior guard Peyton Perkins and Bentley Whitear displayed impressive performances, with Perkins scoring 18 points and Whitear scoring 17, including five 3-pointers. Ultimately, it was Romer’s clutch 3-pointer that stole the show and secured the win for Layton.
This thrilling game showcased the talent and determination of these young players, as well as their ability to stay focused and step up when it matters most. Congratulations to Layton High for their impressive win!
