Tough Battle Ends in Defeat for RPI Women’s Hockey Team

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s hockey team encountered a formidable opponent in the Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday at Messa Rink, resulting in a 3-1 victory for Union. This defeat brings RPI’s overall record to 7-11-3 and 2-10-0 in league play, while Union’s record improves to 6-12-2 overall and 3-7-2 in ECAC Hockey.

In a closely contested matchup, the game remained level through the first half of the opening period before Union took the lead with a goal from Emma Fulawka, with Meredith Killian and Stephanie Bourque each providing assists. Shortly after, Celeste Beaudoin scored unassisted to extend Union’s lead to 2-0.

RPI fought back later in the first period, narrowing the gap to just one goal with a tip-in from Sabrina Beaudoin off a shot from Andrea Trnkova at the 14:28 mark.

The second period remained scoreless for both teams, and RPI goaltender Amanda Rampado’s crucial saves kept the Engineers within striking distance. Despite a strong defense, Union managed to seal the victory with an empty net goal by Beaudoin in the third period, concluding the game with a 3-1 win.

Rampado showcased an impressive performance, making 31 saves throughout the game, while Union’s goaltender, Sophie Matsoukas, made 25 saves in their victory.

Looking ahead, the Engineers will return to action on Friday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. as they host the University of Vermont in the first of two matchups with the Catamounts at Houston Field House that weekend.
