Hamilton College Women’s Hockey Achieves 1-0 Victory Over Utica University

The women’s hockey team of Hamilton College claimed a non-conference victory against the Utica University Pioneers, achieving a final score of 1-0. The game, held at Hamilton’s Russell Sage Rink, featured a power-play goal from Claire McGennis ’24 and commendable goaltending by Teagan Brown ’27, who made a total of 26 saves.

This triumph has extended the unbeaten streak of the eighth-ranked Continentals to six games, elevating their overall record to 5-2-1. Conversely, the nationally ranked No. 7 Utica suffered their first loss of the season, bringing their record to 9-1-2.

The solitary goal was scored just prior to the conclusion of a power play in the second period. McGennis seized the opportunity and scored with a low wrist shot that eluded the goaltender. Brown’s outstanding goaltending, particularly in the second period, played a pivotal role in maintaining the Continentals’ lead. She made 18 saves in that period alone and secured her first shutout in her sixth collegiate start.

The third period witnessed a strong defensive display from Hamilton, as they restricted Utica to just one shot attempt, none of which were on target in the final 12 minutes of the game. Despite Utica’s attempts to pull their goaltender for an extra skater, Hamilton retained control of the puck in the Pioneers’ defensive zone, ultimately securing their victory.

Noteworthy performances in the game include McGennis, currently ranked second in the NESCAC with six goals, and Brown, who boasts an impressive 1.32 goals against average and .936 save percentage. In addition, defenders Cuora Sullivan ’26 and Sophie Berghammer ’26 made significant contributions, with Sullivan securing her second career assist and Berghammer registering her fourth career assist at Hamilton.

Looking ahead, the Continentals will conclude their nine-game homestand with a non-conference contest against SUNY Canton. Scheduled for Tuesday, January 2 at 3 p.m., this game presents an opportunity for the team to further showcase their talent and sustain their success on home ice.

With a strong start to the season, the Hamilton College women’s hockey team has showcased their skill and determination, laying the groundwork for an exhilarating and competitive season ahead.
