It is with deep regret that World Rugby announces the unfortunate passing of former Chairman Dr. Syd Millar CBE at the age of 89. Dr. Millar leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled contributions to the sport of rugby, solidifying his status as one of the sport’s most influential figures.

Dr. Millar served as Chairman of the International Rugby Board (IRB) from 2003 to 2007, during which time he played a pivotal role in shaping the game on a global scale. He notably presided over the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia and the groundbreaking 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, both of which left a lasting impact on the sport’s growth and development.

Prior to his esteemed leadership in the boardroom, Dr. Millar had a distinguished career as a player, coach, and manager. His impressive resume includes 37 appearances for Ireland and participation in three British & Irish Lions tours. His influence on the sport was further evident during his tenure as the President of the Irish Football Union (IRFU) and Chairman of the British and Irish Lions.

Dr. Millar’s impact on rugby extended far beyond the field and the boardroom. He notably coached the Irish national team and led the Lions to an undefeated tour of South Africa in 1974. Additionally, his dedication to the game was evident during his time as Ireland’s manager at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987, an occasion of great significance to him.

In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Dr. Millar was awarded a CBE in 2005 and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2009. Furthermore, he was honored with the prestigious Légion d’honneur in 2007 for his contributions to the sport during the French-hosted Rugby World Cup.

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont has expressed the sentiments of the global rugby community, paying tribute to Dr. Millar as a visionary leader who was deeply passionate about the sport, its values, and its future. His profound impact on the expansion and development of rugby outside of its traditional strongholds will be sorely missed.

As we pay our respects to Dr. Millar, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. His enduring legacy as a towering figure of the game will live on, and his contributions to rugby will forever be held in the highest esteem.
