76ers’ President Daryl Morey Ventures into Musical Theater with Basketball-Themed ‘Small Ball’

The President of the Philadelphia 76ers, Daryl Morey, has taken on a surprising role as the executive producer of an unconventional basketball-themed musical known as “Small Ball,” which combines the world of basketball with the charm of Broadway.

The production, previously performed in Houston and Denver, recently showcased at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre in Philadelphia with plans for an extended run in the future. The whimsical musical is set on the fictional Lilliput island, inspired by the classic book “Gulliver’s Travels,” and follows a team of 6-inch tall players, including iconic basketball figures like Bird, Magic, and even Michael Jordan, albeit not the one known from the NBA.

Morey’s inspiration for the musical stemmed from his passion for basketball and previous interest in musical theater. After conceptualizing a draft for a basketball-themed musical years ago, he collaborated with a theater company in Houston, ultimately leading to the creation of “Small Ball.” Despite its fantastical nature, the production delves into profound themes of grief, hope, and the impact of basketball on people’s lives.

“Small Ball” features an original script by Mickle Mahler, music by Merel Van Dijk and Anthony Barilla, with Morey serving as its executive producer. The show reflects Morey’s love for musical theater, having previously worked on Broadway productions such as “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Parade.”

Even 76ers general manager Elton Brand attended a staged reading of the musical, demonstrating an intersection between the sports and arts realms. As the production gains traction, there are aspirations to bring it closer to Broadway, with Morey conveniently located only a block away from Philadelphia’s theatre district.

The musical has piqued the interest of 76ers coach Nick Nurse, who lightheartedly commented on Philadelphia’s fervent sports fans and their potential affinity for theater, hinting at potential future involvement from the basketball world.

“Small Ball” stands as a distinctive venture that intertwines the worlds of basketball and theater, and with Morey’s influence and passion, it may only be a matter of time before it leaves a significant impression on the illustrious stages of Broadway.
