Ryleigh Heck, a recent graduate of Eastern Regional High School, has been honoured with the prestigious title of Division I National Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Representing the University of North Carolina, Heck played a crucial role in leading her team to victory, resulting in a national title and showcasing her exceptional skills on the field.
The sophomore forward made a significant impact on the team’s success, contributing 34 points through 13 goals and eight assists. Her remarkable performance earned her recognition as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team selection for the second consecutive season, as well as the title of Most Valuable Player of the ACC Tournament. It is no surprise that Heck’s outstanding achievements were instrumental in securing North Carolina’s seventh consecutive conference title and 26th overall.
In recognition of her extraordinary talent and dedication, Heck’s jersey, bearing the number 12, will be retired by the program upon the completion of her career at the University of North Carolina. This serves as a testament to the profound impact she has had on the field hockey community, a legacy that will endure for years to come.
Before embarking on her collegiate journey, Heck’s exceptional abilities were already evident during her time at Eastern. Her senior season alone saw her achieve a national single-season record for goals, scoring an impressive 125 and averaging 3.5 goals per game. With a total of 323 goals throughout her high school career, Heck’s remarkable talent has positioned her as the third-highest goal scorer on the National Federation of High School Association’s all-time list.
Her tenure at Eastern was marked by phenomenal success, with the team amassing an impressive 89-4 record, securing three state titles, and claiming two Tournament of Champions titles. Despite the challenges posed by the 2020 Covid season, Heck’s unwavering commitment and prowess on the field propelled her and her team to achieve remarkable feats, solidifying her status as an exceptional athlete.
