A Strong Defensive Effort Secures TCU’s Third Place Finish in Diamond Head Classic

The TCU men’s basketball team delivered an impressive defensive showcase, leading to their 65-51 triumph over Hawai’i at the Stan Sheriff Center and securing third place in the Diamond Head Classic.

Despite the absence of Essam Mostafa and Chuck O’Bannon Jr. due to injury, TCU presented a well-balanced scoring effort spearheaded by Jameer Nelson Jr.’s 13 points. Nelson, a seasoned guard, made a significant impact coming off the bench for the first time this season. Trevian Tennyson also made a valuable contribution with 10 points, marking his first start of the season.

Maintaining a strong lead throughout the game, TCU held a 36-27 advantage at halftime and continued their momentum in the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead for the majority of the game.

The team’s exceptional performance was evident in their season-best 60.0 percent shooting from the 3-point range, while Hawaii was held to just 25.0 percent. Furthermore, TCU outrebounded Hawai’i 37-35 and improved to an 8-1 record this season when achieving a rebounding advantage.

Head coach Jamie Dixon celebrated his initial victory against Hawai’i, a team for which he previously served as an assistant coach for three seasons. The triumph further contributed to TCU’s impressive 95-15 record against nonconference opponents under Dixon, underscoring their consistency and strength in matchups outside of their conference.

In terms of individual accomplishments, Xavier Cork showcased an outstanding performance with a season-high eight rebounds. Jameer Nelson Jr. delivered a noteworthy performance, scoring 13 points off the bench. Eminel Miller’s scoring streak of 10 straight games was broken as he contributed eight points to the team’s victory.

Looking ahead, TCU is set to face Texas A&M Commerce in their final nonconference game on January 1st at Schollmaier Arena.

This triumphant result solidifies TCU’s robust position in collegiate basketball. Their resilient performance, even in the absence of key players, demonstrates the depth and talent of the team. As they continue to progress through the season, the Horned Frogs are undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with.
