Villagers Express Displeasure Over Proposed Rugby Stadium and Garden City Plans

Residents of Eynsford and Farningham express discontent and opposition towards the proposed plans for a new 28,000-seat stadium and a 2,500 home garden city. An online survey conducted by the Enysford Parish Council revealed that 92% of respondents oppose these plans, which are part of a draft Local Plan issued by the Sevenoaks District Council. The potential sites for these developments include the Pedham Place Golf Course and Petham Court Farm.

Vince Robson, the chairman of the Eynsford Parish Council, articulated the concerns of the villagers, emphasizing the expected increase in traffic congestion. He noted that the existing heavy traffic, particularly on the M25, would be further exacerbated by the additional homes and stadium-related activities. Additionally, the proposed site is situated in a greenbelt area within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is on a hill above the River Darent, a rare chalk-bed river.

While acknowledging the necessity for more housing, Cllr Robson questioned the rationale behind locating these developments in their area, which is distant from the central Sevenoaks District. He also voiced disapproval of the brief timeline for public consultation on the Local Plan.

In response to these concerns, the various parish councils have united to oppose the proposed developments and are advocating for an extension of the consultation deadline. In addition, opponents have established a Facebook page titled “Bees Not Wasps” to increase awareness and mobilize support against the plan.

Conversely, proponents of the garden village concept argue that the developments would be sustainable, with plans for a mix of amenities, including schools, shops, and leisure spaces, to reduce the need for residents to travel outside the village. They also propose the creation of walkways and shuttle bus services to facilitate commuting. Furthermore, they argue that the revenue generated from the scheme would contribute to substantial improvements to the M25 and the surrounding road network, thereby addressing the issue of congestion.

While the Wasps RFC has expressed interest in the potential new home, no detailed plans have been submitted. Sevenoaks District Council has also arranged a drop-in session for residents to learn more about the proposals.

In conclusion, the discontent and opposition of the villagers to the proposed developments are quite evident. The concerns raised regarding traffic congestion and the environmental impact highlight the need for a thorough and inclusive review of the plans. As the public consultation continues and further discussions unfold, it is essential for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and consider the long-term implications of these proposed developments.
