Community Skating Rink Urges Hockey Players to Respect Rules

The Activate Penticton Society has issued a formal request for the public to adhere diligently to the guidelines established for the volunteer-funded and operated outdoor skating rink situated on Martin Street between City Hall and Gyro Park.

In a statement released by the society, it underlined the importance of complying with the rules and expressed concerns regarding the blatant disregard for the regulations by some hockey players. The society emphasized the immense pressure this defiance places on its volunteer-run organization and the potential threat it poses to the future of the free public skating rink in downtown Penticton.

Since the commencement of the season, the society has noted persistent violations of the rules of use at the rink. Requests from rink ambassadors and other members of the public asking hockey players to remove their sticks and pucks from the ice have been met with defiance and refusal, potentially necessitating physical enforcement.

Additionally, camera monitoring has revealed instances of individuals accessing the facility well beyond the closing time of 9 p.m. when all lights are turned off.

Drew Barnes, President of Activate Penticton, has appealed to all users to respect the rules, which have been implemented to ensure the safety of all rink users. While acknowledging a shared passion for hockey, Barnes emphasized the importance of playing the sport in a safe and appropriate manner. He urged hockey players to consider making private bookings if they wish to engage in the sport at the outdoor rink. Barnes underscored that failure to comply with the rules may lead to the closure of the rink, prompting a reevaluation of its offerings.

Furthermore, the society has extended an invitation for private bookings for hockey, emphasizing that such bookings are available seven days a week from 8 a.m. until noon. Interested parties can make their bookings via the Activate Penticton website at activatepenticton.com. Outside of private bookings, the rink is reserved solely for public skating.

In view of these circumstances, it is vital for the public to comprehend the importance of respecting the rules and guidelines set by the Activate Penticton Society for the proper and safe use of the outdoor skating rink. It is imperative that all users, including hockey players, adhere to the rules to ensure that the rink remains a sustainable and enjoyable public amenity.
