Redevelopment Plans for Ayr Rugby Club Clear First Hurdle

Ayr Rugby Club has recently obtained approval for its proposed redevelopment of their Millbrae facility in Alloway. The ambitious project is projected to cost £6.5 million and aims to enhance access to the stadium through the construction of new roads and parking facilities.

The initial phase of the development includes several key components, such as a new access road for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles from Murdoch’s Lone, as well as the utilization of the existing access to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum car park with some modifications. The project also involves extending access within the site down to and around the clubhouse, creating 126 new parking spaces (including eight for disabled use), establishing a turning area and parking for two coaches, and constructing an access road leading to the existing clubhouse and car park.

Brian Williamson, Chairman of Ayr Rugby Football Club, conveyed his delight with the decision of South Ayrshire Council to green-light the plans. The redevelopment is intended to transform Millbrae into a comprehensive sports hub and social venue for all. The total cost of the entire project is estimated at around £11.5 million, factoring in the value of the “surrendered” land assets.

The transition of the club from a private entity to a charitable organization in December 2022 enabled access to external funding sources and facilitated the acquisition of Dam Park from South Ayrshire Council. This transition also resulted in the relinquishment of control over the club’s assets at Millbrae by private club members.

A pivotal catalyst for the redevelopment is the £3 million investment in the club, known as ‘The Macdonald Legacy’, in honor of former 1st XV player Barry Macdonald. This legacy will contribute to the redevelopment, including the replacement of the existing clubhouse with a modern facility, a new stand, floodlights, and a synthetic playing surface.

Jewitt and Wilkie architects have been integral in the planning application, which has now garnered approval. These plans mark the initial phase in a series of enhancements at Millbrae.

The redevelopment proposals represent a significant milestone for Ayr Rugby Club and its commitment to modernizing its facilities for players and supporters. The club’s long-term vision is to establish a sports and social hub that caters to the needs of the local community and elevates the overall experience for all involved. With support from stakeholders and the local council, the club eagerly anticipates the commencement of the redevelopment in early 2024.
