Rolls-Royce Co-Founder’s Former Home Set to Welcome New Golf Driving Range

The historic estate previously owned by the co-founder of Rolls-Royce is preparing to welcome a new addition – a state-of-the-art golf driving range! The Rolls Of Monmouth Golf Club, situated within the registered historic park and garden of The Hendre, has recently obtained approval for this exciting new development.

Located approximately four miles west of Monmouth, the Grade II-listed Manor House at The Hendre, formerly the residence of Charles Stewart Rolls, now serves as a magnificent setting for the golf club. The estate features amenities such as a pro shop, kitchen, and club house, all housed within this historic building.

Since its establishment in 1982, the course has received acclaim from prominent figures in the golf community, including Greg Norman and former US Open champion Tony Jacklin. In fact, Golf World magazine has recognized it as one of the finest courses in Wales.

The planned driving range will be situated in a currently unused field east of the mansion house and the main drive. Additionally, permission has been granted for the construction of a single-story driving range building, which will cater to coaching and practice needs. To minimize the need for extensive groundworks, the building will be of suspended construction.

Club members can anticipate utilizing the driving range to warm up before a round of golf, with added amenities such as a teaching bay for lessons from the club’s golf professional. Notably, the driving range is intended for use only during daylight hours, with no plans for lighting, thereby preserving the visual amenity and wildlife in the surrounding woodland.

It is essential to acknowledge that the plans have addressed the concerns raised by the Whitecastle Community Council and the heritage officer. In response, a condition has been proposed to restrict the use of materials for the clubhouse, and the estate’s existing trees will be used for screening, as approved by heritage body Cadw.

Crucially, the proposals do not encompass any changes to the existing access or parking areas, as the golf course already benefits from extensive parking with ample capacity for visitors to the driving range.

In conclusion, the addition of a golf driving range to the Rolls Of Monmouth Golf Club is an exciting development that is certain to enhance the overall experience for members and visitors alike. As the estate continues to evolve, it remains committed to preserving its rich history and natural surroundings, making it a truly unique destination for golf enthusiasts.
