The New Home for Academy Squash in Huddersfield

Academy Squash, a beloved squash club in Huddersfield, is in the process of relocating to a new location at the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club. For the past 17 years, the club has been located at the Huddersfield Rugby Union Club’s Lockwood Park. However, the club will be vacating the premises by the end of January.

Established by squash coach Malcolm Pickup as a section of the rugby club, Academy Squash has flourished into a vibrant community for squash enthusiasts of all age groups and skill levels. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints and rising costs, the club has made the decision to move to the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club in Edgerton.

Malcolm Pickup expressed his thoughts on the relocation, stating, “We are simply unable to afford the current expected expenses, and I am unwilling to take on the business aspect along with additional costs and responsibilities. It is regrettable that we have to leave, as we have created a welcoming squash oasis for individuals of all ages and abilities.”

The Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club has warmly received Academy Squash, offering them access to five courts for their regular training sessions. Members of Academy Squash will have their memberships honoured until August 31, following which they will have the opportunity to become members of the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club.

With a rich history, Academy Squash has fielded multiple teams in the Kirklees and Calderdale League. Furthermore, Malcolm successfully led a fundraising campaign in 2010 to construct a mezzanine viewing area at Lockwood, allowing spectators to view matches on both courts.

In recognition of Malcolm’s dedication, it is notable that he possesses an extensive background in squash, having commenced playing in 1972, becoming a coach in 1976, and competing at the Yorkshire Premier standard. Additionally, he has participated in numerous marathons and long-distance runs for charitable causes, demonstrating his commitment to both the sport and the broader community.

Apart from the Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, other squash facilities are available in the Huddersfield area, including venues in Honley, Skelmanthorpe, and Mirfield.
