Tough Loss for UAH Women’s Basketball in Overtime Battle with West Alabama

The women’s basketball team of the University of Alabama in Huntsville experienced a narrow defeat in an intense matchup against West Alabama, concluding with a final score of 67-65 in favor of the hosts. Despite the team’s commendable performance, UAH was unable to secure the victory, resulting in a 7-11 (6-9 GSC) record, while UWA improved to 5-14 (4-11 GSC).

Haley Nichols, an outstanding junior player, delivered an impressive performance, achieving a double-double with 14 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. Nichols displayed her exceptional shooting skills, with a 5-for-9 record from the field and a 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Furthermore, Bellah Machen played a pivotal role in directing the Chargers’ offense, contributing a team-high of 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, accompanied by five rebounds.

The team’s freshman talent, Bella White, also made a noteworthy impact, coming close to a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds, alongside leading the team with four assists. White’s free throw in the final moments of the game led to the thrilling overtime opportunity.

Despite the result, the Chargers demonstrated dominance in various crucial areas, including rebounding (44-31), bench points (23-17), second chance points (17-7), and points in the paint (30-24) during the game.

This game marked UAH’s inaugural overtime contest of the season and their first since February 24, 2022, against Mississippi College. Looking ahead, UAH will have the opportunity to regroup as they prepare for two home games next weekend, competing against Shorter on Thursday and Lee on Saturday.

The team remains resolute and focused on delivering strong performances in the upcoming matchups, exhibiting their resilience and competitive spirit on the court. Undoubtedly, it was a challenging loss, but with their unwavering dedication and commitment, the UAH women’s basketball team is poised to make a strong comeback and bring their A-game in the games to come.
