The Passing of Rugby Legend Barry John at 79

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of the esteemed Welsh fly-half, Barry John, at the age of 79. Renowned as “The King” of Rugby, he was widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest players and enjoyed a distinguished career representing Wales and the British and Irish Lions.

Barry John made 25 appearances for Wales between 1966 and 1972, during which he amassed a notable 90 points. His influence on the sport was truly exceptional, and his contributions to Welsh rugby will undoubtedly endure.

Dubbed “The King” by journalists from New Zealand after his pivotal role in the Lions’ historic 1971 Test series triumph over the All Blacks, Barry John will forever be lauded for his significant impact on the game.

In a statement issued by John’s family, it was disclosed that he passed away peacefully at the University Hospital of Wales, surrounded by his beloved wife and four children. The statement also revealed that he was a beloved father to his 11 grandchildren and a much-adored brother.

During his illustrious career, Barry John represented esteemed clubs such as Llanelli and Cardiff. It was at Cardiff where he formed a formidable half-back partnership with Gareth Edwards, a partnership that would go on to flourish for Wales and the Lions.

A true icon of the sport, Barry John’s legacy is further exemplified by his partnership with Edwards in 23 of his Wales international appearances, as well as all five Lions Tests – one against South Africa and four against New Zealand.

The rugby world mourns the loss of yet another star from Wales’ golden era, following the recent passing of full-back JPR Williams just four weeks ago.

Following Barry John’s passing, Jonathan Davies, a prominent figure in Welsh rugby during the 1980s and 1990s, paid homage to the late legend, recognizing his influence on the sport and extending his condolences.
