“Premier League Stars Encouraged to Lead the Charge Against Climate Change”

Former Arsenal midfielder, Mathieu Flamini, is using his influence to advocate for Premier League players to have a positive impact in the fight against climate change.

Well-known for his formidable playing style on the football pitch, the 39-year-old is championing a different cause. As a key advocate for the Green Football Weekend, Flamini has been pivotal in promoting an initiative aimed at encouraging fans to embrace vegetarian meals as part of a sustainable lifestyle.

Flamini’s involvement in environmental causes extends beyond the initiative. In fact, he established a biochemicals company, GF Biochemicals, back in 2008, when he was just 24 years old and still playing for AC Milan. The company focuses on creating sustainable alternatives to oil-based products using levulinic acid, demonstrating Flamini’s commitment to driving positive change outside of football.

In a recent interview, Flamini emphasised the significant influence of the football industry in uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds and religions, making it a crucial platform for raising awareness about climate change. He stressed the importance of shifting the narrative to encompass the health of both the planet and its inhabitants, highlighting the need for more proactive communication on these critical issues.

Flamini also expressed his concern about the impact of pollution on future generations, particularly in regions like China and India where individuals are unable to engage in outdoor activities due to environmental pollution.

While avoiding direct criticism of certain figures within football, Flamini did highlight the importance of practical steps and the need for substantial investment to drive meaningful change. He also underscored the crucial role that major football organisations such as FIFA, UEFA, and the Premier League play in leading the charge towards sustainability.

Drawing from his personal experiences and upbringing, particularly his father’s passion for diving and environmental conservation, Flamini urged more athletes to use their platforms to advocate for causes they are passionate about. He commended individuals like Marcus Rashford, Mesut Ozil, and Hector Bellerin for speaking out on critical issues, highlighting the growing trend of athletes embracing their social responsibilities.
