Amherst College Women’s Hockey Team Makes a Big Comeback to Beat Western New England 4-2

The Amherst College women’s hockey team achieved a notable triumph over Western New England with a 4-2 victory on Tuesday evening. The game took a thrilling turn in the third period when the Mammoths scored three unanswered goals to secure their fifth consecutive win.

The match remained evenly balanced until the final period, with both teams deadlocked at two apiece. However, Maeve Reynolds, a graduate of Williston Northampton School, altered the course of the game with a crucial goal that gave the Mammoths a 3-2 lead with just over six minutes left on the clock. Kelsey Stewart then sealed the win with another goal, assisted by Reynolds, just 40 seconds later.

After a motivating discussion in the locker room, the Mammoths returned to the ice with renewed determination in the third period, demonstrating their true potential. According to senior Mary Thompson, the team managed to break free from complacency and rediscover their winning game plan, which ultimately made all the difference.

The game commenced with a late first-period goal from Amherst, courtesy of Marie-Eve Marleau, who found the back of the net with a one-timer after a pass from Emily Hohmann. Despite scoring late in the period, the Mammoths failed to capitalize on the momentum, allowing Western New England to take the lead with two quick goals in the second period.

Coach Jeff Matthews commended the team’s character and perseverance in the face of adversity, particularly during the challenging second period. Despite facing a large number of shots on goal and falling behind, the Mammoths’ determination ultimately paid off in the final period with the impressive comeback.

Looking ahead, the team is focused on continuous improvement leading up to the NESCAC tournament, with Coach Matthews emphasizing the importance of teamwork and gradual progress. With a record of 17-2-2, the Mammoths are eager to maintain their winning momentum as they prepare for their next game against Curry College.

This exhilarating victory is a testament to the Mammoths’ resilience and determination, and the team is eager to build on this success in the forthcoming games.
