Hornell Holds Strong at No. 1 Spot in Girls Basketball State Rankings

The Hornell girls’ basketball team has cemented its position as the top team in the Class B state rankings for seven consecutive weeks, boasting an impressive record of 15-1 with less than a fortnight remaining in the regular season, solidifying their status as a formidable force in the sport.

In their recent fixture against Dansville, the Red Raiders claimed a resolute 60-45 victory, with leading scorer Raegan Evingham contributing 20 points. Despite a challenging early 7-0 lead by Dansville, Hornell remained composed and focused, ultimately emerging victorious.

Coach Jim Dagon lauded the team’s defensive strategy and their cohesion on the offensive end. The team’s resilience and experience in testing games have been evident, underscoring their prowess and determination.

The fact that Hornell’s success is even more remarkable considering the team’s young lineup, with three of their five starting players being sophomores and one a freshman, speaks volumes about the team’s potential for the future.

As the regular season draws to a close, Hornell’s winning streak will be tested by upcoming challenges from tough opponents such as Aquinas, Palmyra-Macedon, and Bishop Kearney. These matchups will serve as a litmus test for the Red Raiders’ skill and resolve as they strive to maintain their leading position.

In a surprising turn of events, the previously undefeated Dundee/Bradford team in Class C suffered their first loss to Bloomfield, resulting in a drop from 12th to 23rd place in the rankings. However, the team remains a strong contender and is anticipated to secure the top spot in the upcoming C2 bracket.

Furthermore, Section V is well represented in the NYS top 25 rankings, with several teams from different classes making the list. The rankings across Class AA to Class D showcase the depth and talent of girls’ basketball teams in the region.

As the season progresses, it will be intriguing to see how these teams continue to perform, with much anticipation regarding whether Hornell can maintain their position at the top of the rankings.

The dedication and skill of these teams are a testament to the thriving girls’ basketball scene in Section V, and their passion for the sport is truly commendable. The upcoming games promise to deliver an exhilarating display of talent and sportsmanship, and fans eagerly await the outcomes and future developments in the rankings.
