The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team sadly suffered a 92-84 loss to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, despite an exceptional and career-best performance by junior guard Elijah Elliott, who remarkably scored 40 points. The game, held at Johnson Coliseum, showcased a commendable effort by the Vaqueros in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) confrontation, yet proved insufficient to secure the win.
Elliott’s extraordinary display included a 56.5% shooting from the field, with three successful three-pointers and an 11-of-13 free throw conversion. His remarkable efforts also saw him contribute two assists and two steals. In support, junior guard Sherman Brashear added 18 points, including four three-pointers, while senior forward Daylen Williams secured 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and four points. SFA’s Latrell Jossell led the scoring with 24 points, complemented by strong performances from Matt Hayman and Nana Antwi-Boasiako.
The game commenced with a defensive tone as both teams contended under the hoop. UTRGV demonstrated resilient defence to keep the scoring low, but SFA embarked on an 11-0 run, securing a 36-18 lead, their largest advantage of the first half. Nevertheless, the Vaqueros courageously fought back, with Elliott and Brashear leading the counter-attack and culminating the half with an electrifying showcase of scoring prowess.
In the second half, a determined effort from UTRGV ensued as Elliott and Brashear continued to impress. They reduced the deficit to 51-44 and intensified their defensive plays, securing steals and quick transitions that brought them within single digits of their opponent. An impressive 9-0 run propelled UTRGV into the lead, but SFA countered with a run of their own, ultimately securing the victory despite Elliott’s exceptional 40-point performance.
Looking ahead, the Vaqueros are scheduled to face Abilene Christian on February 15 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in a 6:30 p.m. WAC contest, as they continue their pursuit of success.
