Disappointing Loss for Penn State Men’s Hockey to No. 8/9 Minnesota

The men’s hockey team from Penn State University experienced a challenging defeat against the No. 8/9 Minnesota team, suffering a 3-0 loss in their Big Ten Conference matchup at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The game commenced with an early lead from Minnesota, with two goals scored in the first four minutes of play. Rhett Pitlick secured the opening goal less than a minute into the game, followed by another goal from Pitlick at the 3:49 mark of the first period. The Gophers extended their lead in the third period with a goal from Connor Kurth just 76 seconds into the frame.

Penn State’s senior goaltender, Liam Souliere, made 24 saves during the game but was unsuccessful in preventing all of Minnesota’s scoring attempts. On the opposing side, Minnesota’s Justen Close made 36 saves, resulting in his third shutout of the season.

Despite outshooting Minnesota 36-27 and having several powerplay opportunities, the Nittany Lions were unable to find the back of the net. They also effectively defended against Minnesota’s powerplay opportunities, achieving a perfect penalty kill rate.

This loss represents the second time this season that Penn State has encountered a shutout and the first time they have been shut out on the road since February of last year.

The two teams are scheduled for a rematch on Saturday afternoon at 3M Arena at Mariucci to conclude their regular-season series.
