Survivors on the Court: Skyview and Union’s Path to State

The girls’ basketball tournament is reaching a fever pitch, with the Skyview and Union teams demonstrating their resilience as they compete for a spot in the state playoffs.

The Skyview girls’ basketball team achieved their second consecutive victory in a loser-out game, defeating Bethel 48-43 in the District 3-4 tournament, bringing them one step closer to a state tournament berth. With a season record of 14-8, the Storm’s next challenge will be against Kentwood at Stadium High School in Tacoma on Thursday.

Brynnlee Williams excelled with 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half, propelling the Storm’s comeback after being limited to only five points in the second quarter. Kierra Parks also stepped up, scoring all eight of her points in the second half, including two crucial 3-pointers, while Lainey Phillips added 10 points to the scoreboard. The team is committed to securing their spot in the state tournament, and they will have another opportunity to do so if they face defeat on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Union’s dominant performance led them to a 70-40 victory over Kentridge, with Brooklynn Haywood making an outstanding 43-point contribution. Union is now within reach of a state playoff berth, and a win against Emerald Ridge on Thursday at Stadium High in Tacoma would solidify their position. Ava Smith also made her mark with 10 points, driving Union to claim their second consecutive loser-out game in the District 3-4 tournament.

Kelso also fought hard to remain in the competition, securing a 44-37 win over Auburn Mountainview in an intense showdown. Kenzie Milligan’s 15 points, combined with a stellar defensive effort that forced 31 turnovers, propelled Kelso to victory. They now have their sights set on a state berth, with a crucial match against Lincoln of Tacoma on the horizon.

Unfortunately, Mountain View’s season came to an end with a hard-fought 42-32 loss against Peninsula in the 3A bi-district loser-out game. Despite the valiant efforts of Layla Senderson and Sophia Wright, who contributed nine and eight points respectively, Mountain View finishes their season with a commendable record of 16-6.

As the tournament unfolds, the competition continues to intensify as teams battle it out for a coveted spot in the state playoffs. The drive, determination, and skill exhibited by the players on the court are a testament to their unwavering commitment and passion for the game.

With each game presenting a new challenge and opportunity, the journey to the state playoffs promises to be an exhilarating and unpredictable ride. Fans and supporters eagerly await the upcoming matches as the teams give their all in pursuit of state tournament glory.
