Providence College Women’s Hockey Team Suffers Narrow Overtime Loss to Maine, 2-1

The women’s hockey team of Providence College suffered a devastating loss in overtime against Maine, with a final score of 2-1. The game occurred at the Harold Alfond Sports Arena in Orono, Maine on Friday, February 16.

Providence’s only goal was scored by Audrey Knapp from Stevens Point, Wis., and showcased a strong performance from Hope Walinksi of Lincoln, R.I., who completed the game with 34 saves.

The game was a closely contested battle, with both teams remaining goalless in the first and second periods. Shots were 25-20 in favor of Providence after the initial two periods, underscoring the competitive nature of the game.

Providence gained the lead in the third period with a goal from Audrey Knapp, assisted by Brooke Becker of Orchard Park, N.Y. However, Maine managed to even the score at 1-1 with a goal from Ava Stevenson, forcing the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Maine’s Mira Seregely secured the victory with a goal just 13 seconds in, with assistance from Adriana Van De Leest and Sam Morrison. The final score stood at 2-1 in favor of Maine.

Despite the eventual outcome, Providence’s Hope Walinski, from Lincoln, R.I., delivered an impressive performance with 34 saves. It is worth noting that the last five games for Providence have gone into overtime, resulting in a 0-2-3 record for the team.

In terms of statistics, Providence had 38 shots and won the face-offs 32 out of 24. They had one power play opportunity and successfully killed off two penalties. Conversely, Maine recorded 36 shots, won 24 face-offs out of 32, had two power play opportunities, and only allowed one goal while on the penalty kill.

Looking ahead, the Friars will conclude their regular season play with a home-and-home series against Merrimack College. The first game will be held at Schneider Arena on Friday, February 23, with the second leg taking place in North Andover, Mass. on Saturday, February 24.
